The Big Ideas in Number (BIN) underpin the way we teach maths at Henley Beach Primary School. It is a framework that lays the foundation for the conceptual development of number sense and is essential for mathematic learning. If children don’t fully understand these key ideas, it can be harder for them to progress in maths. 

The “Big Ideas in Number” include: 

• Trusting the count (understanding and trusting numbers) 

• Place value (knowing what each digit in a number means) 

• Multiplicative thinking (seeing how numbers can be multiplied and broken apart) 

• Partitioning (breaking numbers into parts) 
• Proportional reasoning (working with fractions, ratios, and comparisons) 

Tied in with our focus on the BIN is our approach to mathematic problem solving and reasoning. All students are exposed to a range of problem types, multiple strategies and the skills to learn how to explain and justify their thinking.  

Our maths curriculum helps students develop not only strong maths skills but also positive attitudes and important life capabilities.
We focus on: 

• Dispositions: Helping students develop confidence, curiosity, and a willingness to have a go at solving problems—even when they are challenging. 

• Capabilities: Building skills like reasoning, working with others, using technology, and communicating clearly about maths ideas. 

• Knowledge: Ensuring that students gain a deep understanding of maths concepts, number skills, patterns, measurement, and problem-solving. 

Our aim is to help every child become a capable, confident, and creative maths learner, ready to use their maths skills in everyday life.
