HBPS Sustainability
While getting their hands dirty, children learn how to be responsible by taking care of something and seeing the consequences when they don’t do the work. These opportunities to take responsibility and work with others can build students’ self-esteem, and watching their garden grow is the sign of their success.
Grub Club
Henley Beach Primary School is proud to offer our students the opportunity to be involved in maintaining our school vegetable garden, the Grub Club. With the help of Grub Club volunteers, we offer students a fun hands-on gardening experience and help them to develop healthy habits and a love of vegies! Students take part in a wide range of activities including planting, garden maintenance, harvesting, and craft. Promoting the importance of responsibility and teamwork, the Grub Club provides an opportunity to bring science, maths, humanities and social sciences, language and visual arts to life through practical learning, whilst encompassing a sense of community wellness.
Recycling at HBPS
We have been working hard on Recycling at HBPS since conducting a waste audit in 2019 and have fully embraced the Department of Educations new Waste Management Strategy. Every classroom separates their waste into coloured bins, including blue (paper and cardboard), yellow (mixed recycling), green (food waste and paper towels) and red (non-recyclable items diverted to a waste to energy facility). We also collect 10c containers with the help of the SA Scout Recycling Centre raising much needed funds for playground upgrades. In addition to this our staff facilitate the recycling of batteries, printer cartridges, pens and markers, and we continue to be a community collection point for the recycling of oral care products. We are very proud of our recycling efforts at HBPS!
Nude Food
As part of our Sustainability initiatives, we actively encourage all students and staff to bring nude food lunches. A nude food lunch contains items with no single-use packaging. This minimizes waste, can often be cheaper and is usually healthier! For more information please check out the Nude Food Information for Families at www.wow.sa.gov.au
EcoWarriors
Students play an active role in leading our Sustainability initiatives here at HBPS. Each class selects two representatives to be EcoWarriors who attend regular sessions and take part in a range of activities, communicating their efforts with the wider school community via assemblies, videos and newsletters. We hope to inspire all our students to be leaders in sustainability both inside and outside school and in their futures beyond!
